A brief history of blueprints…
Originally blueprints were made by coating paper with a photosensitive compound that, when exposed to light, turned the compound into insoluble blue. After the soluble chemicals were washed off, you would see white lines on a blue background… hence the word “blueprints.”
This printing method was used for almost a century before a new process called diazo was developed. This process used dyes and chemicals to produce blue lines on a white background… commonly called “blue lines.”
Although these chemical processes have been replaced by digital processes, design drawings now usually have black lines on white bond paper, we still usually refer to these documents as “blueprints.”
